The Impact of Ambient Conditions on Liquid Cooling

Understanding how the environment impacts liquid cooling systems and their components

    Download Tech Guide

    Overview

Computing demands are growing across a wide range of applications unrelated to high-performance computing or AI data centers. 5G, blockchain, IoT, streaming entertainment and self-driving technologies all require high computational loads -- loads that generate a lot of heat. And these applications are less likely to be consolidated in massive data centers. For example, Edge compute facilities and electric vehicle fast-charging stations are sited in the environments they service. This makes them subject to localized conditions including fluctuating temperatures and humidity, as well as airborne contaminants. Compared to climate-controlled environments where liquid cooling systems operate, additional considerations need to be taken into account when specifying liquid cooling system components where the ambient environment fluctuates or is uncontrolled.

“The Impact of Ambient Conditions on Liquid Cooling: Understanding how the environment impacts liquid cooling systems and their components” covers the three factors that can impact liquid cooling systems in challenging environments. Subcomponent material factors related to temperature, humidity, and air quality are discussed and a reference table outlines material characteristics relative to ambient conditions to assist engineers in making proper specification decisions for reliable liquid cooling systems.
