    High-performance computing technology is possible today in large part to the thermal management techniques and the innovative thermal engineers who design, develop and implement various thermal management systems to cool the computing processors. One of the most widely used thermal management methods is cold plate liquid cooling where there is direct contact between a cold plate and the element being cooled. 

    Keeping IT Cool Now

    Cold plates are responsible for transferring heat from surfaces with high heat loads to the fluid used within the liquid cooling system. These cold plates dissipate the heat generated by electronic components, or any other surfaces with high heat loads, to the coolant that flows to a remote heat exchanger. Heat is then transferred into either an ambient or another liquid in a secondary cooling system.

    What Makes Up a Cold Plate System?

    A cold plate liquid cooling system consists of a pump, heat exchanger, connective tubing, quick disconnect couplings (QDs) and cold plates―replacing heat sinks and fans. The cold plate, usually made of metal, is made up of internal tubing where a liquid coolant absorbs the heat transferred to the plate by transistors and other components mounted on it. The variables involved in determining the heat transfer capability of a cold plate depends on: 

    • available surface area in the flow paths  
    • coolant selection
    • flow rate of the liquid
    • material used to make the cold plate
